Punjabi Playlist

Every time someone questions my music taste—especially my fondness for Punjabi songs—I find myself wondering how anyone could resist the magic woven into their soulful lyrics. Music, after all, is not bound by language; it speaks directly to the heart.

As a Tamizhachi, my love for Punjabi music might seem unexpected to some, but it feels completely natural to me. After becoming a Hindi Pandit in the 8th grade, I never imagined that I would one day understand and emotionally connect with songs in languages like Punjabi, Urdu, Odissi, and other Indian tongues. Yet here I am—not only comprehending the lyrics, but also relating them to my own life experiences. Of course, my playlist proudly carries a rich collection of Tamil songs as well, because my roots will always resonate through Tamil music.

What primarily draws me toward Punjabi songs is their infectious energy. The fast beats, vibrant rhythms, and powerful vocals instantly lift my mood. While many people my age prefer melodic or slow-paced songs, I feel that such music sometimes pushes me into a gloomy state of mind, eventually giving rise to negative thoughts. That said, I am not against melodious music—many find peace and emotional healing in it, experiencing a quiet refreshment of the soul.

Some might argue that if I enjoy fast beats so much, Tamil Kuthu songs—an energetic folk tradition frequently showcased in cinema—should satisfy me completely. I agree to an extent. However, embracing a little change in musical taste adds colour and freshness to life. Variety, after all, keeps music exciting.

As a teenager, I grew up listening to several Punjabi artists, and their songs have stayed with me through different phases of my life. I am over the moon to share that I can suggest Punjabi songs for almost any situation, long before the moment even arises.

One such emotional connection I hold is with the film Shershaah (2021), a Hindi biographical war film directed by Vishnuvardhan. The movie chronicles the life and bravery of Captain Vikram Batra, one of the greatest officers of the Indian Army and a Param Vir Chakra awardee, who laid down his life during the 1999 Kargil War. Born on 9th September 1974 in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, to a Punjabi family, Vikram Batra’s courage continues to inspire millions.

 Mann Baarya Song Lyrics

Tu sab janda ae
Main chad ni sakdi tainu
You know everything,
I
cannot live without you
Taan hi taan ungallan te
Roz nachauna ae mainu

And that is why,
you make me dance on your fingertips everyday

Agle janam vich allah
Aisa khel racha ke bheje
In next birth, Oh Lord!
do something such that

Mainu tu bana ke bheje
Tainu main bana ke bheje
I become you,
and you become me

Ve fer tainu pata lagna
And then you will realise
Kiven pitta jandae paani khara khara
how one drinks the salty-water [tears]
Ve tu mainu chhad jana
Gallan teriyan ton lagda ae yaara
oh! you will leave me
It seems like from your talks

Ve methon tera mann bharya..
Oh! you are no longer interested in me…

Mann Bharrya, a Punjabi song from Shershaah, holds a special place in my heart. Every time I listen to it, tears well up in my eyes. The song beautifully captures love, loss, and sacrifice, reminding me why music especially Punjabi music has the power to touch emotions beyond words.
